Crater Lake was formed when the mountain erupted thousands of years ago, blowing the entire top of the mountain away and creating a basin for water to fill up. Wizard Island is the small cinder cone that the lava has pushed up in the middle of the lake, and now it is the island in the center of the lake.

This photo took half a day to take, as we had to snowshoe around the rim of the crater since all the roads were closed from snow.
